We need to build an Ark for Cornwall

In a previous blog post I referred to an important government report that warns we are heading in the direction of ecosystem collapse in the UK and abroad. It is hard to overstate the grave danger we face over the longer term. There is no clear time line but the report says that this could happen as soon as ten years from now.

It is odd that this has attracted little media attention but then, the media are so wrapped up in its own circus pantomime that real news rarely ever hits the headlines. This collective sense of denial is compounded by a complete lack of vision by our political leaders. In so many ways the current ‘Drama Starmer’ is a form of navel gazing that distracts us from the real challenges we face, of which the greatest is the climate and nature crisis. Our leaders are like squabbling children at a beach party, kicking each others sandcastles down, while out to sea, a tsunami approaches.

The attached document is a set of proposals which are an attempt to set out a practical response to the government’s report. The context is what we can do in Cornwall so the ideas are necessarily small scale and avoid too much detail – that needs to be worked out at a later point. It is hoped that these ideas can contribute to local action. Others may look at these and think of other and better ideas – if so, this paper will have done its work.
